The Beauty of the Imperfect
27.07.26 21.08.26
Sonia Saldaña Paz’s practice emerges from a fascination with nature, using monumental-scale painting as a way of altering our habitual relationship with the vegetal world.
Her works move beyond the genre of still life and the limits of representation to become spaces of bodily experience, where scale transforms the distance between the viewer and what is being viewed. Enlarged to acquire a disproportionate and commanding presence, the flowers cease to function as delicate objects arranged for contemplation and become expansive forms that confront, envelop, and physically engage the viewer. This visual hyperbole is not merely a compositional device; it compels us to shift our gaze from the recognition of a species toward a more perceptual experience.
Originally from Monterrey, a city deeply marked by its industrial landscape of concrete and steel, Saldaña Paz works within the tension between a constructed, rigid, and functional urban environment and a nature that manifests itself as expansive, changing, and difficult to contain. Working from images conceived and digitally manipulated, she introduces monumental flowers into compositions that also incorporate urban objects and historical figures. These strategies disrupt conventional relationships of scale, proximity, and hierarchy between the human body and the vegetal world, positioning nature not as a backdrop but as a presence that claims and contests the space of the gaze.
In the work she produced during her residency at ´ace, her flowers acquire a spatial and symbolic dimension. Their scale, expansion, and intensity alter the viewer’s relationship with what ordinarily belongs to the realm of the small, the delicate, and the fleeting. Through this transformation, the flower embodies its own temporality: growth, opening, fullness, and decay, but also what remains in memory after disappearance. Saldaña Paz uses the vegetal as a material through which time and its transformations become visible, setting the permanence of painting against the inevitably transient nature of what it represents.
