Gina Kukulski and Sam Malvas, were sub30 artists in Exploration Residency working during the March 2017 period. As a closing of her time at ´ace, we did an Open Studio on Wednesday March 29th, in which Gina and Sam shared their work process with artists, colleagues and the public from Buenos Aires.
Focused mainly on still life photography and with a great handling of the digital photography, theory of color, and art history appropriations, Kukulski explored during her residency other ways and possibilities within this format and resources. She moved from the photographs with completely still compositions of fruits, objects that suggest movement, different presences and even something phantasmagoric. She also focused on investigating an issue that has interested her since college, the combination of photography and painting. Within this, she added textured backgrounds that move away from the flat colors and clean surfaces with which she works in other series, without ever losing the harmonious compositions.
Sam is a painter who takes inspiration from her travels, and Buenos Aires presented itself as a great place with vibrant colours, contrasts and varied areas for her to create. During the four weeks of her residency, Sam added the transfer technique through which she included the maps of different areas of the city she had visited, combining in this way the acrylic paint with paper. As she got more immersed in the city, the colours she used shifted from strong reds, greens and blues to a wide scale of greys.
