Creating with Light
Artists in dialogue

09.06.25

As part of the Port to Port: Baltimore to Buenos Aires travel-intensive program, Proyecto´ace had the pleasure of welcoming a group of students and faculty members from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), one of the leading art and design institutions in the United States, organizing theoretical and practical workshop focused on photolithography and visual storytelling.

Led by Nate Larson, Photography Area Head at MICA, and Eduardo Corral-TlaloC, interdisciplinary artist and faculty member, the group consisted of students from the Photography and Illustration Departments who traveled to Buenos Aires to immerse themselves in the city’s vibrant culture, architecture, and artistic scene. Their three-week journey aimed to deepen their creative practices through fieldwork, local engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

During their visit to Proyecto´ace, the session began with an introduction to the studio’s mission and our growing collection of prints and artist books, developed through our international artist-in-residence programs and curated by founding director Alicia Candiani. These selected works illustrate expanded approaches to photo-based techniques—particularly experimental photolithography—and reflect the multiplicity of narratives that pass through our space. The day continued with a demonstration by Sebastián Podbersich, coordinator of the ´ace workshop, who guided the students through the process of photolithography. Following the demo, students were able to create their own plates using personal photographic material, translating their experiences in Buenos Aires into tangible visual narratives.

This encounter was not only an opportunity to share technical skills and conceptual frameworks but also a meaningful moment of cultural exchange. We are grateful to Nate Larson and the MICA team for approaching this collaboration with such openness and generosity. Their presence brought fresh perspectives and reinforced our commitment to fostering international dialogue through artistic practice.

The Latin America's Paris

Buenos Aires is Argentine Republic's capital city. With 15,000,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in Latin America and one of the 10 most populous urban centers in the world. Its cosmopolitan and urban character vibrates to the rhythm of a great cultural offer that includes monuments, churches, museums, art galleries, opera, music and theaters; squares, parks and gardens with old groves; characteristic neighborhoods; large shopping centers and fairs. Here we also find a very good lodging facilities, with accommodation ranging from hostels to five-star hotels of the main international chains. Buenos Aires also show off about its variety of restaurants with all the cuisines of the world, as well as to have cafes and flower kiosks on every corner.

A neighborhood founded on the Jesuit farms in the 17th century

We are located in Colegiales neighborhood where the tree-lined streets, some of which still have their original cobblestones, invite you to walk. Although the apartment buildings advance, low houses still predominate. It is a district of the city where about 20 TV production companies, design studios, artist workshops and the Rock&Pop radio have been located. The neighborhood also has six squares, one of which pays homage to Mafalda, the Flea Market, shops, restaurants and cafes like its neighboring Barrios de Palermo and Belgrano, with which it limits.
